Northern Gauteng Expo for Young Scientists

4Knowledge awards cash prizes for the best primary and high school projects in the social sciences category in the Pretoria region and assists winners in refining their research papers for the national finals.

In September 2009 Tinus Green and Adri Haasbroek (both Grade 11) from Hoërskool Overkruin in Pretoria won the high school prize at the regional finals and went on to win a silver at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists at the national finals.  Their research paper was on the effect of the recession on teens. Some of the startling conclusions they made after interviewing and doing surveys on about 1500 school kids around Pretoria, is that teens' debt rate is about 80% of their income!

In the junior division, Carlia Swart (grade 6) and her sister Clarette (Grade 4) did an excellent research paper on why kids in Pretoria don't want to drive the bicycle to school anymore. They went on to nationals and won a silver medal. Congratulations to our social scientists of tomorrow!
